With Nigeria touted to be one of the United Nations Security Council Veto wielding members by the pundits, there has never been a better time than now, to provide the youths with a credible, authentic and responsible platform to put forth their thoughts, beliefs, ideas and aspirations in such a professional and diplomatic format like that of the Upper and Lower Chambers of the Nigeria Legislative arm of Government.
Hundreds of thousands of Nigerian youths are been catapult into the unprepared society by the various higher institution of leaning. Statistics from the National Youths Service Corp shows that, on average basis, 200,000 youths graduates annually from various institutions across the 36+1 states of the federation.
The Nigeria National Model Legislature (NNML), just like its Model United Nations counterpart, is an extracurricular activity where students simulate the legislative arm of the Nigeria Government. The students, better known as Honourable members or Senators, choose a legislator of their choice form either the House of representative or the Senate. These legislators are perceived to have understood better than anyone, the political, economic and welfare situation of their States and constituents.
The students thereby, learn thoroughly about the view, thoughts and probably the well known and established characters of the chosen legislator on the Federal, State and Local Government issues as well as issues that affect their individual region and constituency.
These student representatives will come annually at the conference, elect their leaders; Senate President and the Deputy Senate President in the case of Upper chamber simulation, Speaker and the Deputy speaker in the case of the Lower Chamber simulation, in addition to the principal officers of the various committees of the two chambers.
The crux of the simulation is to consciously and deliberately prepare the students for future leadership skills and capacity as well as to develop the young Nigerian students in Civic Leadership, critical thinking, Good Governance, innovative and Diplomatic Processes, in addition to Public Speaking, through a hybrid of innovative and complimentary approaches.
Up-to-date National issues/Bills already initiated at the two chambers will be infused into the program and through partnership with the relevant Government agents, parastatals and other Non-governmental Organizations, the program is sure to develop young, transformative and productive Nigerian leaders.
